The Will to Make a Will: Tackling the Important Tasks
The Will to Make a Will: Tackling the Deathly Important Task
By: Charles Curtin, JD, LLM, CTFA, HNB Vice President and Trust Officer
August is the most important month of the year in the Curtin household. On top of our annual pilgrimage to the “shore,” various camping endeavors, and back to school preparation, our clan has a number of birthdays to celebrate. My father, Charlie Sr., kicks it off on August 3, then my son, Charlie, on August 6, followed by nephew, Charlie, on August 14. As you can see, we have a lot of parties in August and are not very original with baby names. I was born in June, so I have been dubbed “Impostor Charlie” by those irascible Leo Charlies.
Outside of the Charlie triumvirate birthdays, August is also “National Make a Will Month.” Who knew? Much of my professional career has been focused in the estate planning arena, so, of course, I feel “National Make a Will Month” is quite important. A properly planned and executed Last Will and Testament is able to save much heartache in a time already full of anguish.
More than Half of Adults Fail to Make a Will
Obviously, the preparation of a Last Will and Testament is not the most pleasant experience. Over 50% of adults do not draw one up, because the thought is so disagreeable. However, preparing and executing a Last Will and Testament is important for just about everybody, no matter the size of his or her bank account. The document provides:
- certainty about who will handle the estate and how its assets are distributed,
- clarity regarding the potential caregiver of any minor children,
- how taxes should be paid.
If a Last Will and Testament is not implemented, state law will determine who gets what assets, the guardian of any minor children, and add unnecessary complexity to an already unfamiliar process.
Turning Will into Action
When it is time to finally get started, the following are a few helpful hints that can make the process palatable.
- Determine in advance who should be in charge of the estate. This is typically someone or some institution (like your friendly, neighborhood bank) who is responsible, organized, and able to deal with the time consuming process. It is advised to have a substitute in mind because often the original choice will not be available or be unwilling to serve.
- Begin preparing a list of personal items and who should receive them. The list will provide clarity because, in my experience, the personal effects like jewelry, artwork, and furniture are the most argued over items.
- Review your beneficiary designations on retirement account(s) (IRA, 401(k)), insurance, and bank accounts. These assets may already have an intended recipient listed, which might not coordinate with the proposed Last Will and Testament. Harmony amongst assets is important.
I know it is a lot to digest, but no worse than determining which Charlie’s birthday falls on what date. If you do need some help taking that first step, contact the HNB Financial Group. We have been helping people for over 95 years and will meet with you – at no cost!
Enjoy the last days of summer…fall will be here before you know it.

During America Saves Week and every day, community members are encouraged to visit their local HNB office to speak to an HNB representative about setting goals and making plans.
HNB offers the following quick tips to become a stronger saver:
- Add a line for savings in your budget. Rent, utilities, internet…savings! Prioritize your goals with an affordable amount of savings in your budget. Pay yourself with each paycheck.
- Teach the kids. Good savings habits start at home, so model good financial habits for your children. Teach them to do the same, and help them open their own savings accounts.
- Save your raise. Did you receive notice of a raise for 2018 or have a bonus coming your way? Allocate these unexpected funds to your savings goals. You won’t miss the percentage raise when you divert it into your savings account, but you’ll have it for a rainy day!
- Split up your refund. Everyone has big plans for their tax refund, but for most, this check is the largest one received all year. This is the perfect opportunity to start or grow your savings goal.
- Make it automatic. Set up automatic payments towards your savings goals by setting up “automatic funds transfers” from your checking account to your savings account to be sure you’re saving regularly.
Whether saving for college, looking forward to retirement, building contingency funds or just saving up for that special something, HNB can assist you in building a savings plan with immediate or long-term goals.
